I've been conned a few times buying records because a sticker on it or an advertisement told me : "with ..... from TOTO, and ......... from CHICAGO, and ....... from ......." and the music on it was not good at all for me. I felt like a fool.
And sometime, there's an exception !!
I was waiting for a long time (like a lot of people) the LA project of Peter Friestedt. I didn't know him but I knew I would find M.Ruff, J. Williams, B. Cantos and B. Champlin singing on the record. I listened to this cd a few days ago and I just have one word to define it, PLEASURE !!
The singers we like sing at their best and the music is great. Peter sign one of the most pleasant album of the year.

If it is something I do admire it is a guitarist with self-distance and moderation. It is also very rare. When I listen to Peter Friestedt’s LA-Project I realize not only this rarity but also a writing talent where the song and not the guitar is in the centre. With how many guitarists can you experience this?
Peter has through hard work and connections gathered many of LA’s finest studio musicians on his CD. The lead vocals are done by Bill Champlin(Chicago), Joseph Williams(Toto), Bill Cantos(Jay Graydon All Stars) and Michael Ruff. Champlin, Cantos and Ruff are besides lead singers also co-writers of the songs. The songs are of very high quality and the music is American west coast with all the production values that you expect from such productions. It is really great to see Stefan Gunnarsson’s name both as a musician and composer on one of the best tracks of the CD called Got To Find It. (I look forward to the day when I get a Stefan G CD in my player).
Peter Friestedt has composed or co-written all songs except one and plays almost all of the guitars on the record. Peter is a very tasteful guitar-player who never fails. Playing wise I somehow did expect pop/rock with a lot of sustain. I was wrong cause Peter’s moderate and tasteful playing is much closer to Lee Ritenour, with a fat humbucker-sound and a dynamic distortion (when this is used). The songs are rich of variation and carefully arranged which makes the CD very easy to listen to. Peter makes a great impression with his courage to vary different styles of music on the CD and also his profession skill to create homogeneity in the final production. The LA-Project is in my ears some of the best work in the genre in many years. I want more!

Peter Friestedt, young Swedish guitarist who performed with Per-Eric Hallin, Nils Landgren in Sweden, has just released his first leader album, "The LA Project".
The album was recorded in North Hollywood, between December 1999 to July 2000. The rough mixing took place in October / November of 2000 in Los Angeles.
The album features 3 songs "Livin' In Your Life", "Time To Play", "Take A Little Chance" co-written by Bill Champlin who also sings lead vocals on these tracks. And you cannot ignore this young guitarist's coming album because of involved musicians such as Mike Shapiro, Russ Ferrante, Jimmy Haslip, Abe Laboriel, Ralph Humphery.
And One track called "Only Prayer" was co-written with Michael Ruff, which has one of the best quality of Ruff's melodies in recent years.
Another killer track "Peace Of Mind" co-written with and sung by Bill Cantos is really astonishing! What a stylish and thirilling tune this is! I have no words to praise....
And furthermore I am pleased to let you know that Joseph Williams sings one track called "Got To Find It, which is not written by Joseph but this must be one of the best Westcoast pop music Joseph sings. I cannot stop reviewing this album without giving you short comment regarding a instrumental tune "Storyteller". If I say this is a brand-new Yellow Jackets tunes just released, no one suspects, I beleive. I can say this album is a real masterpiece which will not never been forgotten over the years. Buy it! And more amazing is the line up, this "project" has to offer... or what do you give me for guys like Bill Champlin, Michael Ruff, Joseph Williams, Abe Laboriel, Bill Cantos and Yellowjackets just to mention a few! As you all understand this is a dream for you guys who thought the music was better in the early 80's and misses the days of Airplay, Maxus, Bill Labounty and Champlins soloalbums. This CD plays almost in the same league

Imagine this: me, great ingredients and a nice kitchen. These three things wouldn't necessarily mean that I would cook a tasty soup, would they? Sure, I would have a shot at it, but there are still tons of things that could go wrong. I could, and most likely would turn the long-awaited meal into something that looks like coal. So I guess you could say that to make a great soup out of great ingredients, you need to be a great cook, too.

Let me explain. Peter was born in Strömstad, Sweden in 1973. At the age of 11 he began to play the guitar and luckily, he never stopped. After studying at various Swedish music institutions, Peter moved to L.A., where he studied at Los Angeles Music Academy. It was during this time he began to work on the project that would see the light of day in December of 2002, The L.A Project.
Peter is, as many other Swedish musicians, greatly inspired by the slick "westcoast" (a.k.a. West Coast) sound circa 1977-1983. Names such as Bill Champlin, Joseph Williams and Abe Laboriel may not ring a bell for the average music listener, but those of us who are fans of the "westcoast" genre, consider them to be among the greats of music. With the intention of creating an album that captured that great westcoast sound, Peter gathered not only Champlin, Williams and Laboriel, but also many other great L.A musicians.
The result is breathtaking. It's slick, but still not too polished. The music sounds new and fresh, yet it has that old-fashioned westcoast sound to it... a perfect combination.
Peter wrote or co-wrote eight of the nine songs on this release. Bill Champlin of Chicago and the Sons of Champlin does the lead vocals on three of these songs. The fact that Champlin is a veteran and has spent many hours of his life in a studio is obvious when you listen to his vocals and vocal arrangements. The three Champlin-sung songs are already classics in my book, especially the blues-inspired "Time To Play."
Another highlight is track number three, "Only Prayer," a beautiful ballad sung by Michael Ruff. The song features some great guitars by Peter, a nice saxophone played by ex-Tower of Power member Brandon Fields and Ruff's just-right Hammond organ.
I would say that "Got To Find It" has a great chance of getting some airplay; it's probably the most commercial-sounding song of them all. Joseph Williams (composer and ex-singer of Toto) proves that he still has that excellent voice that was heard on smash hits such as "Pamela" and "Stop Loving You."
I could go on and on about each of these great songs, but I'll leave it at this. As for that cooking thing... what I was trying to say is that, even if you get all these great musicians' names on your record, it doesn't guarantee that the record will turn out great. You also have to be a talented musician, songwriter and producer to pull it off, and Peter Friestedt is all of those things. His guitar playing, songwriting and (basically) taste for good music has turned The L.A. Project into one of the best CDs so far in the 21st century. We're looking forward to a follow-up album!

As you may know, Westcoast music is one of my favourite forms of the AOR genre and our next artist Peter Friestedt has just released "The LA Project" a must have CD if you are into this style of music. With a line-up that includes a lot of the major players in Westcoast music such as Bill Champlin, Joseph Williams, Bill Cantos, Micheal Ruff and Abraham Laboriel, it is, as you would expect a very classy release that at times borders on the soul/jazz style of Westcoast that is favoured by the likes of Bill Champlin and Eric Tagg. It is late night easy listening and will only appeal to the hardened Westcoast fan (so that's anybody who ever bought a Toto record then!) At times the musicianship is breathtaking and Peter puts in a faultless performance on guitar. The word "Smooth" was invented for this record, check him out at www.peterfriestedt.com

Peter Fristedt är en sällsynt begåvad gitarrist och här kommer också en sällsynt förteelse. Svensken har nämligen lyckats med det nästan omöjliga:att samla en stor del av den amerikanska studiomaffian och fått de med sig på sin nya skiva. En platta som givetvis luktar amerikansk västkustrock a´la Bill Champlin, men kanske mest som ett Steely Dan i högform. Bill Champlin sjunger. Joseph Williams sjunger. Och det låter föträffligt om man gillar perfekta ljudslingor kompat med skönsång av yppersta klass.
Suveränt var ordet.

Strömstadsonen, gitarristen och låtskrivaren Peter Friestedt, har studerat vid LAMA (Los Angeles Music Academy). Via de kontakter han knöt där och naturligtvis också på grund av sin duglighet har han fått göra det som han kallar sin drömskiva.
Och när man läser musikernas namn i skivhäftet förstår man epitetet: Joseph Williams – sångaren från Toto, Bill Champlin - sångaren från Chicago, Bob Mintzer – saxofonist från Yellowjackets, för att nu bara nämna några.
Resultatet har blivit därefter - en kanonbra skiva med gospelkryddad funksoul i typisk västkustdräkt.

Svenska gitarristen Peter Friestedt har med hjälp av tunga namn som Bill Champlin, Abe Laboriel och Ralph Humphrey dykt ner i den amerikanska västkustmusiken. Utan några hörbara ambitioner att lägga till något eget har han åkallat den slicka 70-talsgenren i dess renaste form. Det är ingen lätt uppgift men Peter Friestedt och hans samarbetspartners – både svenska och amerikanska – har genomfört sitt projekt med hedern i behåll.
Skivans första hälft har den rätta lätta känslan med snygga melodier och metronomiskt svängiga grooves med smak av soul, jazz och gospel. Allra bäst är ”Peace of mind”, med snygg sång och perfekt klaviaturspel av Bill Cantos, och den karaktäristiskt puttrande ”Got to find it”. Andra hälften är tristare med två anonyma instrumentala spår och två utfyllnadslåtar signerade Friestedt och Bill Champlin.
Projektets svagheter till trots tas det med tacksamhet emot av alla västkustvänner, det är jag övertygad om. Själv ser jag fram emot en uppföljare som ännu bättre kan matcha det intensivt avspända energiflöde som västkusthjältarna fick till när det verkligen begav sig.

För Peter Friestedt från Strömstad har det verkligen gått undan sedan han vid 26 års ålder åkte till Kalifornien och LAMA (Los Angeles Music Academy). Tillsammans med ett flertal framstående musiker från den amerikanska västkusten har han skapat albumet The LA Project [LA Project/Border Music], ett album i sann västkuststil. Trummisarna Ralph Humphrey och Michael Shapiro alternerar, liksom sångarna Bill Champlin (Chicago) och Joseph Williams (Toto). Michael Ruff och gruppen Yellowjackets är andra inblandade i den svenske gitarristen och kompositörens projekt. Ett smakfullt album för alla i den stora skaran av västkust-fans.

Gitarristen och låtskrivaren Peter Friestedt från Strömstad har lyckats samla ihop gräddan av Los Angeles studiomusiker, dessutom Chicagos sångare Bill Champlin och Totos före detta dito Joseph Williams på sin debutskiva.
Resultatet är riktigt bra. Elegant västkustrock med riktigt skönt jazzgung. Det är ganska uppenbart att Steely Dan är förebild. Och även om det är hart när omöjligt att komma upp i deras nivå så levererar Friestedt pärlor som Peace of mind och Got to find it, som inte ligger långt efter.
Det här är förvisso musikermusik, men det svänger på ett naturligt och behagligt sätt. (Border)

Det är inte var dag man får en CD med gammal klassisk västkust-musik i sin hand. Dessutom med stora delar av den klassiska ”västkust-maffian” som jag lärt mig att beundra under årens gång. Namn som Bill Champlin, Michael Ruff, Joseph Williams, Bill Cantos, Abe Laboriel, Jim Haslip, Jeff Richman och medlemmarna i gruppen Yellowjackets ger mig härliga rysningar i hela kroppen. ”The LA Project” heter plattan som många väntat på sedan två år, då jag först hörde talas om den.
Bakom projektet finns en 30-årig Strömstadsfödd Göteborgare som heter Peter Friestedt. Peter har under senare år studerat i Los Angeles under ledning av den kände gitarristen Frank Gambale på LAMA (Los Angeles Music Academy) och gick ut som kurs-etta år 2000. Samma år började inspelningarna på den platta jag nu har i handen. De flesta spåren är Friestedt-kompositioner som arbetats fram tillsammans med respektive sångare, Bill Champlin står för tre spår, Bill Cantos för ett och Michael Ruff står för ytterligare ett spår.
De tre spår som Bill Champlin sjunger på är de spår som bär störst ”westcoast”-prägel och som är lite mer åt jazz och gospel än övriga spår. Champlin lär ha jobbat ”övertid” när han fick höra Friestedt, och från att från början diskuterat en låt blev det till sist tre där Bill Champlin sjunger med sin karakteristiskt, varma stämma. De tre låtarna, ”Livin’ in your eyes”, ”Time to play” och ”Take a little chance” håller mycket hög klass och slår vida det som Champlin själv släppt de senaste åren.
Spår tre är Michael Ruff’s både i sången och i stilen. Att låten är lugn är ju ganska typiskt för Ruff som ibland kan bli lite väl ”smörig”. Utomordentligt luftigt komp och en skön sax från Brandon Fields gör låten till en riktig höjdare.
Bill Cantos är en pianist som man kan hitta som musiker på ganska många plattor från USA’s västkust, men själv har han bara gjort några extremt tråkiga ”muzak-plattor” (=hissmusik) som är så vettlöst populära i Japan. Dessutom är han en populär kompositör, men i låten ”Peace of mind” vet jag inte riktigt vad som hänt. Låten är kanonbra, men problemet är att hela låten är en stöld! Rakt av! Det var min sambo som upptäckte att låten redan spelats in av Michael Jackson och att den då heter ”Baby be mine” och är skriven av Rod Temperton. Farligt nära en utvisning! Bästa spåret heter ”Got to find it” som sjungs av gamle Toto-sångaren Joseph Williams. En härligt suggestiv bagatell vars refräng fastnar så det räcker.
Att heta Peter Friestedt och komma från Strömstad i Sverige kanske är en fördel när man ringer runt till alla dessa fantastiska musiker och ber om deras hjälp. Sverige har hög status bland de msuiker som utövar denna undanskuffade musikstil, som lever på en hängiven fanskara som i jämförelse är stor som en stolsrygg i Globen på en Bruce Springsteen-konsert. Peter Friestedt är ett nytt namn att se upp till för här lever traditionen vidare på ett alldeles lysande sätt. Jag önskar bara att mer musikälskande konsumenter kunde hitta fram till denna varma och härliga stil.

Detta är sagan om den gitarrspelande Strömstadskillen som började studera i Los Angeles, huvudstad för den insomnade stilen västkustrock. Han gjorde intryck på trummisen Michael Shapiro som hjälpte honom att damma av flera ur så kallade studiomaffian för en inspelning: gamle Chigagosångaren Bill Champlin, förre Totosångaren Joseph Williams, grånande superbasisten Abe Laboriel, delar av Yellowjackets med flera.
Och faktiskt, okände Friestedt smälter in och lyckas dessutom få gubbarna att tända till på ett 35 minuter långt tvärsnittt med tyngdpunkt på det funkigt finliriga programmet. Troligen det bästa generen bjudit på flera år. Det klassiska västkust-soundet är smakfullt rent och genomförandet riktigt begåvat.
